Akira Toriyama is a Japanese mangaka.
He achieved his first commercial success in Japan in 1980 with the manga series “Dr. Slump”. In 1984, he also achieved his international breakthrough with “Dragon Ball”. With over 240 million sold copies worldwide, the series is one of the most successful and popular of all time. The anime adaptation of “Dragon Ball”, and especially its sequel series “Dragon Ball Z”, also became known far beyond Japan and have left a lasting mark on the fighting shounen genre.
In addition to his activities as a mangaka, he has also contributed to well-known works through his work as a character designer for the “Dragon Quest”, “Chrono Trigger” and “Blue Dragon” video game series.
Toriyama died on March 1, 2024, as a result of a blood clot in his brain.
