Nana (2000)

Nana Komatsu, who grew up in a remote small town, has always dreamed of great love, but her previous choice of men, mostly adults such as her art teacher, has ensured that her love life in high school, while not monotonous, has been far from satisfactory. When she meets the attritional Shouji, something could come of it, but fate has other plans because while her best friend Junko and Shouji go to Tokyo to study, she has to stay behind and earn money first because of her failed entrance exam.

Two years later, Shouji is still in her heart, even though they have lived apart for so long. With her savings, Nana sets off to find happiness in Tokyo, and during the train journey, she has a fateful encounter with the musician Nana Osaki. The seemingly self-confident woman is a singer who went through a breakup with her boyfriend Ren a while ago and now wants to pursue a music career in Tokyo after her band, Black Stones, broke up.

Although the two are quasi-fundamentally different, they get along well; when fate brings them together again while looking for a flat, they decide to move in together. Despite their different natures and goals, the two become close friends who significantly influence each other and their environment.

Nana Komatsu, aufgewachsen in einer entlegenen Kleinstadt, träumt seit jeher von der großen Liebe, doch ihre bisherige Auswahl an Männern, nämlich überwiegend Erwachsene, wie zum Beispiel ihrer Kunstlehrer, hat dafür gesorgt, dass ihr Liebesleben in der Oberschule zwar nicht eintönig, aber keineswegs zufriedenstellend war. Als sie den attraktiven Shouji kennenlernt, könnte daraus was werden, aber das Schicksal hat andere Pläne, denn während ihre beste Freundin Junko und auch ihr Shouji zwecks Studium nach Tokio gehen, muss sie aufgrund ihrer vergeigten Aufnahmeprüfung zurückzubleiben und erst einmal Geld zu verdienen.

Zwei Jahre später ist Shouji noch immer in ihrem Herzen, obwohl die beiden so lange auseinander gelebt haben. Mit ihrem Ersparten macht sich Nana auf den Weg, um in Tokio ihr Glück zu finden, und macht während der Zugfahrt eine schicksalhafte Begegnung mit der Musikerin Nana Osaki. Die scheinbar selbstbewusste Frau ist Sängerin, hat vor einer Weile eine Trennung von ihrem Freund Ren durch und will nun in Tokio eine Musikerkarriere anstreben, nachdem sich ihre Band Black Stones aufgelöst hat.

Obwohl die beiden quasi grundverschieden sind, kommen sie gut miteinander klar; als sie das Schicksal bei der Wohnungssuche wieder zusammenführt, beschließen sie – nach ein wenig Gerangel – zusammenzuziehen. Trotz ihrer verschiedenen Wesen und auch Ziele werden die beiden enge Freundinnen, die einander und auch ihr nächstes Umfeld maßgeblich beeinflussen werden.
