Kyoto Animation was founded in 1981 by Youko Hatta and has 129 employees. The company is headquartered in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan.

Youko Hatta’s husband, Hideaki Hatta, is the current president of the company. She herself assumes the management position and heads the planning and production department of the company.

On the July 18, 2019, a fire was reported at the company’s Studio 1 in Uji. The building was completely destroyed in the incident. 36 people lost their lives and 33 were injured. The cause of the fire was an arson attack.
