Description
Crunchyroll is a streaming portal with a community that was launched in 2006. After the first well-known partner in Japan, Gonzo, was found for cooperation in 2008, all unlicensed content was removed from the platform by the beginning of 2009. Subsequently, Crunchyroll has become the largest legal anime streaming portal in the world in cooperation with the producers in Japan, but also licensees in the USA and other countries.
In December 2013, Chernin Group, a holding company, announced that they bought shares in Crunchyroll. Later, in April 2014, AT&T and Chernin Group announced that they are forming a joint venture called Otter Media. The newly formed company became Crunchyroll’s largest shareholder. In August of the following year, Ellation was formed by Otter Media. Crunchyroll was outsourced to the newly formed subsidiary which was to take care of all streaming services, as well as VRV later on.
The offer includes an extensive number of free titles, such as “Naruto Shippuden” or “Gintama”. The latest episodes are mostly reserved for paying premium customers 7 days after release – selected titles such as “Folktales from Japan” are basically only available to premium customers.
Since the end of October 2013, Crunchyroll has also been offering manga as digital publications in cooperation with Kodansha. At the start, 12 titles, including “Attack on Titan” and “Fairy Tail”, were published as so-called simulpub at Crunchyroll Manga. With this offer, the last chapter of each manga is also accessible to free users. To read older chapters and entire volumes, Premium access is required.
Crunchyroll continues to expand its range of series and various languages in form of subtitles. In April 2012, the official launch took place in Latin America (Spanish and Portuguese), in May 2013 in Spain, in October 2013 in France, in April 2014 in Germany, in September 2015 in Italy and in February 2018 in Russia.
Some titles were already available with translated subtitles before the official launch, for example in Germany from November 2013.
Crunchyroll offers subtitled anime (much of it German) as well as German-language news. For some titles, an English dubbed version is also available. On the 16th November 2017, the first German, French, Spanish and Portuguese dubbed versions were also released. Numerous simple voice-overs are also produced for the Russian-speaking market.
For licensing reasons, the offer varies from country to country. In the USA and Canada, the offer is most extensive, while certain titles such as “No-Rin” or “Prison School” are only available in other countries.
From September 2016 to the 9th November 2018, Crunchyroll worked closely with FUNimation. As part of the partnership, Crunchyroll streamed FUNimation titles in original with subtitles – mostly also outside the USA & Canada – while FUNimation dubbed particularly popular Crunchyroll titles in English and later released them on DVD & Blu-ray. In France, @Anime has been releasing various Crunchyroll titles on disc since early 2018.
In Germany, Kazé and KSM have acquired the disc rights for various Crunchyroll titles in 2019 and are releasing them on DVD & Blu-ray.
Since April 2017, Crunchyroll has held cinema events at irregular intervals in the USA, first as “Anime Movie Night”, later as “Crunchyroll Movie Night”.
In September 2019, the group Viz Media Europe took over the company and the associated German and French subsidiaries. The following year, the respective companies were renamed Crunchyroll S.A.S. and Crunchyroll SA. The Kazé label remained unaffected by the renaming.
Major restructuring also took place at Ellation in early 2020. Crunchyroll was no longer advertised as a subsidiary of the latter, but as a Warner Media company. (The fact that there were some subsidiaries in between was not mentioned much.)
On the 9th December 2020, Sony Pictures Entertainent Inc. announced that it had acquired Ellation for 1.175 billion U.S. dollars. The antitrust division approved this deal, allowing it to close on the 9th August 2021. In the process, Ellation, Inc. became a subsidiary of Funimation Global Group, LLC.
At the beginning of 2022, the holding company Funimation Global Group, LLC was renamed Crunchyroll LLC. It was also announced that the Crunchyroll brand would be given preference. As part of this realignment, Sony’s various anime streaming services are to be merged. This affects FUNimation as well as Wakanim, Animax Germany and VRV. Since March 2022, Crunchyroll has started to integrate catalogue titles from the other portals on its platform and offer them to its customers.
In 2022, the new Blu-ray and DVD releases of the acquired companies were switched to the new Crunchyroll branding: Madman (Australia) in May, Funimation (USA) in June, Kazé Anime Germany in August, Manga Entertainment (UK) in September and Kazé France from November. Since October, all new manga releases from Kazé (DE) and all manga volumes from Kazé France have also been published with Crunchyroll branding, and reprints of old volumes in Germany from April 2023.
At the beginning of August 2022, Crunchyroll acquired the US online retailer Right Stuf including all associated companies (Nozomi Entertainment), but sold the publisher Critical Mass Video a few days later.
In Switzerland, the company Film Verleih Gruppe Waldner acts as the technical partner for most of the smaller theatrical releases as part of the “Crunchyroll Anime Nights”.
