One New Year’s Eve, an old man met an old traveller of small stature, whom no one in the poor village would give shelter. The old man took the traveller to his wife, and the three of them celebrated the New Year together. Amidst all the merriment, the old woman was missing one thing: a child of her own. He told her that the traveller could grant her this wish. All she had to do was draw water at dawn from a spring at the foot of Mount Dodo. After a few words of gratitude, the traveller vanished into thin air, leaving only a leaf behind. The two were amazed when the traveller’s promise was fulfilled, and they found a child the next day. A second leaf floated past them, and the woman was sure: the traveller was none other than the New Year God.

Twelve years have passed since that morning. The boy they found is called Taro, and one day, he rides through the village again, despite being forbidden to do so by a mountain demon. After Mount Dodo erupts again and Taro is admonished by his grandparents, he searches for the mountain demon and finds a weakened firebird inside the mountain who, out of sheer desperation, has unknowingly made the mountain glow and rumble after each failed attempt to fly. Taro decides to help him and summons his patron god. Promptly, the same traveller appears on a white horse with a golden mane and, to Taro’s amazement, reveals himself to be the God of the New Year and instructs him to find the “Water of Life” to cure the firebird. So Taro embarks on an adventurous journey.

Eines Silvesterabends begegnete ein alter Mann einem alten, kleinwüchsigen Reisenden, dem niemand in dem ärmlichen Dorf ein Nachtquartier gewähren wollte. Der alte Mann nahm den Reisenden mit zu sich und seiner Frau und gemeinsam begingen die drei das Neujahresfest. Während all der Fröhlichkeit fehlte der alten Frau nur eines: ein eigenes Kind. Diesen Wunsch vermag der Reisende zu erfüllen, teilte er ihr mit. Alles, was sie dafür tun müsse, sei es, während der Morgendämmerung Wasser an einer Quelle am Fuße des Berges Dodo zu schöpfen. Nach einigen Worten der Dankbarkeit löste der Reisende sich in Luft auf und ließ lediglich ein Blatt zurück. Die beiden staunten, als sich das Versprechen des Reisenden erfüllte und sie am nächsten Tag ein Kind vorfanden. Ein zweites Blatt schwebte an ihnen vorbei und die Frau war sich sicher: Der Reisende war kein Geringerer als der Neujahrsgott.

Seit diesem Morgen sind zwölf Jahre vergangen. Der gefundene Knabe heißt Taro und reitet eines Tages wieder durch das Dorf, obwohl dies wegen eines Bergdämons verboten ist. Nachdem der Berg Dodo erneut ausbricht und Taro von seinen Großeltern ermahnt wird, sucht dieser den Bergdämon und findet im Berg einen geschwächten Feuervogel, der vor lauter Verzweiflung nach jedem missglückten Flugversuch den Berg unbewusst zum Glühen und Rumoren gebracht hat. Daraufhin beschließt Taro, ihm zu helfen und ruft nach seinem Schutzgott. Prompt erscheint auf einem weißen Pferd mit goldener Mähne eben jener Reisende, der sich zu Taros Verwunderung tatsächlich als Neujahrsgott zu erkennen gibt und ihm aufträgt, zur Heilung des Feuervogels »das Wasser des Lebens« zu suchen. So begibt sich Taro auf eine abenteuerliche Reise.

Una Nochevieja, un anciano se encontró con un viejo viajero de baja estatura, al que nadie en la aldea pobre le daba un alojamiento para una noche. El anciano lo invitó a su casa y juntos con la mujer del anciano, festejaron el año nuevo. Durante toda la felicidad, sólo le faltaba algo a la anciana: un hijo propio. Este deseo se lo cumple el viajero, le dijo éste. Todo lo que tenía que hacer era sacar agua durante el amanecer de un manantial al pie del monte Dodo. Tras unas palabras de agradecimiento, el viajero se desvaneció en la nada, dejando sólo una hoja. Los dos ancianos estaban sorprendidos, cuando la promesa del viajero se cumplió y al día siguiente encontrarse con un niño. Una segunda hoja pasó flotando junto a ellos y la mujer tuvo la certeza: el viajero no era otro que el Dios del Año Nuevo.

Desde esa mañana pasaron 12 años. El niño encontrado se llama Taro y un día vuelve a cabalgar por el pueblo, a pesar de estar prohibido por culpa de un demonio de la montaña. Después de que el monte Dodo haya entrado en erupción de nuevo y Taro sea advertido por sus abuelos, éste búsca al demonio de la montaña y encuentra en la montaña un pájaro de fuego débil, que de forma inconsciente hacía que la montaña brillara y retumbara, por culpa de la desesperación tras cada intento de vuelo fallido. Taro decide ayudarle y llama a su dios protector. Enseguida aparece ese viajero en un caballo blanco y con una melena dorada, que, para sorpresa de Taro, se revela como el dios del Año Nuevo y le encarga que busque «el agua de la vida» para curar al pájaro de fuego. Así inicia un viaje lleno de aventuras para Taro.
