Matoi the Sacred Slayer (2016)

“Matoi the Sacred Slayer” is set in 2016 and is about Matoi Sumeragi, who is in her second year of high school and works part-time at the Tenman Shrine in the town of Kamaya. The fact that, unlike many others her age, she is quite happy about her quiet, unexciting life is not surprising: her parents separated when she was a child, and after living with her grandparents for some time, she is now back living with her father.

Matoi’s best friend, Yuma Kusanagi, also works at the shrine; her family has been performing rituals to drive away evil spirits for generations. Yuna invites her friend to attend such a ritual: the “Divine Procession” ritual, which is to be performed by Yuna. But before the ritual can begin, Matoi and Yuna get a nasty surprise on their way back from school: the shrine is devastated, Yuna’s family is partly seriously injured, and the only witness does not seem to be in his right mind.

Yuna performs the ritual anyway. But this has consequences – not for Yuna, but for Matoi! Suddenly, she gains access to the powers of a god and now has to deal with beings called “Nights”. At least she soon receives support from the exorcist Clarus and the agent Haruka; both are familiar with these beings, and the latter even works for an organisation dedicated to fighting them. So, if Matoi ever wants to go back to her quiet life again, she has no choice but to take up the fight against the Nights.

»Matoi the Sacred Slayer« spielt im Jahre 2016 und handelt von Matoi Sumeragi, die sich im zweiten Jahr der Oberschule befindet und als Teilzeitkraft im Tenman-Schrein in der Stadt Kamaya arbeitet. Dass sie im Gegensatz zu viele anderen in ihrem Alter über ihr ruhiges, unaufgeregtes Leben ganz froh ist, verwundert nicht: In ihrer Kindheit haben sich ihre Eltern getrennt, und nachdem sie geraume Zeit bei ihren Großeltern gelebt hat, kommt sie nun wieder bei ihrem Vater unter.

Matois beste Freundin, Yuma Kusanagi, arbeitet ebenfalls im Schrein; ihre Familie führt seit Generationen Rituale zur Vertreibung böser Geister durch. Yuna lädt ihre Freundin ein, einem solchen beizuwohnen: dem Ritual »Divine Procession«, das durch Yuna durchgeführt werden soll. Doch noch bevor es dazu kommt, erleben Matoi und Yuna nach dem Rückweg aus der Schule eine böse Überraschung: Der Schrein ist verwüstet, Yunas Familie teilweise schwer verletzt und der einzige Zeuge scheint nicht bei klarem Verstand zu sein.

Yuna führt das Ritual dennoch durch. Doch das hat Konsequenzen – und zwar nicht für Yuna, sondern für Matoi! Urplötzlich erhält diese Zugriff auf die Kräfte eines Gottes und muss sich jetzt mit »Nights« genannten Wesen herumschlagen. Zumindest erhält sie bald Unterstützung durch den Exorzisten Clarus und der Agentin Haruka; beiden sind diese Wesen nicht unbekannt, letztere arbeitet gar für eine Organisation, die sich dem Kampf mit diesen Wesen verschrieben hat. Will Matoi also je wieder ihr harmloses Leben führen, bleibt ihr nichts anderes übrig, als den Kampf gegen die Nights aufzunehmen.
