Description
Anime International Co., Inc., often abbreviated as AIC, is a Japanese animation studio based in Nerima, Tokyo Prefecture, which was founded on July 15, 1982.
The first managing director was Kazufumi Nomura, who had previously worked at Mushi Production.
Tooru Miura took over this position in May 1985, having previously worked at Easy World Pro.
In 2003, the company was reorganized, and the studios AIC Digital, AIC Spirits and AIC A.S.T.A. were founded. In 2006, the AIC Takarazuka studio was launched in Takarazuka and AIC PLUS+ was established in Tokyo.
In May 2008, the company was re-established under the name Anime International Co., Inc.
Although the company has consisted of five studios since 2009, they are not referred to individually but appear together under the name AIC instead of the studio’s specific name. The two studios, AIC Build and AIC Classic, were founded in 2010.
In September 2010, the company was taken over by the Pachinko slot machine manufacturer Oizumi Corporation and became a subsidiary. In March 2011, Aplix IP Holdings Corporation acquired all of Oizumi’s shares from AIC.
In June 2012, the studio AIC Frontier was founded, making AIC a total of eight animation studios.
Studio AIC Spirits separated from AIC in February 2013 and became its own company under the name Production IMS, but remained a subsidiary. AIC Classic also became independent, giving rise to the studio TROYCA.
On January 20, 2014, the parent company Aplix IP Holdings Corporation announced that it had sold AIC to Miura for 8,000 yen (1 yen per share). This made the company independent again. The financial report at the end of 2012 shows that the company was in the red for the third year in a row. Debts amounted to around 660 million yen.
In November 2015, Yasutaka Oomura took over as CEO. Many of the company’s IPs were transferred to the newly founded company AIC Rights in the same year.
In 2016, the production department was discontinued and dissolved. The company withdrew from the active anime business.
In December 2019, Oomura left the management, and Miura took over the position again in January 2020.
